Does Your Cat Avoid the Litter Box?

If your cat has started to avoid the litter box, take heart. There are things you can do to learn the cause of this behavior. There are usually three reasons why cats urinate outside their litter box.

1. Medical Condition. If your cat suddenly starts peeing in inappropriate places, make an appointment with your veterinarian to investigate disorders known to cause this behavior. Any change in your cat's behavior, including a difference in litter box habits, should be investigated.

2. Feline marking. Some cats will mark or spray a certain when they are stressed. Marking and spraying are different. Cat marks in a squatting position, urinating onto a flat surface. Spraying is done by backing up to a vertical surface like a wall and urinating while standing.

3. Litter box aversion. Cats can often times relieve themselves outside their litter box. This means he or she may not like the box itself, the location, the litter, or a combination.

There are other reasons why kitties urinate inappropriately, for example, aggression or behavior problems among cats in multi-cat household. The best advice is to take your cat to the veterinarian if any abnormal behavior occurs.
