Cat Ear Mites
Ear mites one of the most common problems cats can have.
There are several types of ear mites, but the most common are otodectes cynotis, which is an eight legged parasite that feeds on wax and oils in a cat's ear.
A mite has a three week life cycle and is barely detectable to the naked eye. Causing irritation and inflammation, ear mites infect the external and internal ear canal and can lead to serious skin and ear infections if untreated.
Ear mites are highly contagious and are passed from pet to pet in casual contact at home or outside. Ear mites are responsible for 50% of cat ear infections. Your cat may have earmites if he or she displays excessive scratching and rubbing ears, head shaking, hair loss, dermatitis, strong odor, inflammation of the ear, or obstructions in the ear that look like coffee ground debris. If your cat shows any of these symptoms, it is best to take your pet to your veterinarian.
