Cat Allergies
Like most mammals, cats have allergies. Cats can exhibit an array of symptoms including sore eyes, excessive mucus, sneezing, itchy back or ears, and paw chewing. Just like humans, cats can suffer from an aray of different allergies too. Cats who have developed food allergies will scratch their head or neck as a symptom. Food allergies can show up at any age for a cat. Cats who spend time outside will be more prone to flea and pollen allergies, and cats who are overweight or exposed to cigarette smoke are more likely to develop asthma. Trees, grass, dust pollen, food, fleas, prescripton drugs, cleaning products, and rubber or plastic materials can all cause allergic reactions in cats.
The best way to treat allergies is to remove the offending allergens from a cat's environment. Cats owners can do this by:
1. Use dust free, unscented litter.
2. Clean the cat's bedding once a week and vacuum at least twice a week.
3. Bathing the cat may help relieve itching and remove environmental and allergens from the skin.
