Are You Ready to Adopt a Cat?
Adopting a cat is the way to go, especially since June is adopt-a-cat month. However, a cat is a long term commitment and there are some things you can should consider before you bring a kitty home as your pet.
1. Do you have time to commit to a new cat? Do you work full time or travel frequently? Many animal shelters recommend a pair of cats as pets so they can keep eachother company while you are away. If you are not home enough to adopt a cat, most rescues will tell you right away, since it is one of the first questions asked.
2. Consider what kind of cat you want to adopt (kitten, cat, senior cat). Kittens require more attention. They may need spayed or neutered and vaccinations, but there is joy in watching them grow up and play, becoming a curious, loveable cat. Adult cats are all unique and you should wait for one that truly grabs your heart. Senior cats can be more work, as with owning a kitten. With their age, there can be more frequent ailments. It is most important not to rush in the selection process and find a cat that suits you and your home.
3. Cats need to be fed good, nutritious food regularly, one time a day, if not more. Food purchase can be costly, so this should be calculated into your finances.
4. Cats require plenty of cold, fresh water. Contrary to popular belief, cats do not need milk. Milk can give cats horrible intestinal difficulties and cause weight gain.
5. If you have other pets, keep them caged or in a different room at the beginning, since you won't know right away if your adopted cat is aggressive around other animals. This may require some training on your part until all pets can live peacefully together.
6. Consider the cost of microchipping your adopted cat. Most rescue shelters cannot afford to microchip for you, but microchipping is the best way to locate your cat should he or she get loose.
7. Keep in mind that cats need companionship and love. Independence does not mean they can raise themselves. Kittens and cats, especially ones that are adopted, seek your love and attention.
