Household Hazards for Cats
Cats are curious animals! Exploring their environment may expose them to obvious dangers, especially in the home. It takes a bit of time to cat proof a home, but as a cat owner, it is worth it to know that your cat is healthy and safe. Here are some examples of hazardous items around your home that can cause harm to your cat:
1. Human medicines. Medicines such as antidepressants, cold medicines, diet pills, vitamins and supplements should not be left any where in your home that your cat could get to.
2. Human foods. Items such as alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, garlic, grapes, onions, and raisins should be items that are kept free from your cat's reach and diet.
3. Indoor and outdoor plants. Plants such as aloe, azaleas, lilies, misteltoe, poinsettia, rhododendron, and tulips are very dangerous to cats if ingested.
4. Insecticides and chemicals. Items such as antifreeze, bleach, detergents, dog flea and tick medication, fertilizers, insect and rodent bait should be left in a place where there is no way your cat can come into contact.
5. Choking hazards. Things like chicken bones, dental floss, holiday decorations (lights and tinsel), and toys with small, moveable parts are easy to ignore, but can be very harmful to your cat.
Every moment matters if you think your cat has been exposed to something toxic. Call your vet immediately or the Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435. Watch for any symptoms inlcuding breathing problems, coughing, diarrhea, salivation, seizures, shivering, skin irritation, and vomiting.
